Jon Bratten of Honolulu took top honors in the first two-day motorcycle enduro ever held in the State. Dennis Vierra of Hilo finished second over-all and Colin Iwasa, expert trials rider from Honolulu, finished third.

Bratten, 24-year-old 125cc amateur motoscross racer, finished second the opening day of the trials event and finished first on closing day. Bratten kept his mind, body, and motorcycle at the right attitude during the grueling contest. He commented after the enduro that this was a situation where a rider could not stop to consider if it would be possible to maneuver the formidable terrain. If he thought about it, he would never attempt it.

Nathan Jensen of Hil was the outstanding rider of the event. He placed first on opening day with an almost flawless score of 3 points. Bratten had 24 points that day. The span of points for the first hundered miles was from 3 to 543. Jensen was on his way to top honors the second day when mechanical trouble caused him to pull out near the end of the course.

Thirty-five riders started the Rock Island Riders' 200-mile enduro the first day and 26 finished. The first hundered miles were the roughest with water-holes, boulders, fallen trees and deep mud part of the obstacles along the course. One tall riders, Paul Novak, was observed walking his submerged bike through chest-high water. Bike was towed out and rider did not finish that day but managed to wring out himself and motorcycle in time for the next day's contest.

The first riders to complete the opening day course were at the finish line after four and a half hours. The last rider in had been on the trail 8 hours and 48 minutes.

Twenty-seven riders started the second day and 24 finished the course. All riders completed the course within the estimated time of six hours. The "blue Ribbon Trail", which made "rock riders" of all competitors, was over nine miles of lava bed with every variety of lave.
